Kiefer Sutherland – Liseberg

Jack Bauer, also known as Hollywood actor Kiefer Sutherland, has a lot of strings on his bow. More specifically six, Mounted to a Telecaster.

With his six-piece band, he gave Liseberg a cosy night of country that would eventually climax into a full-blown rock concert!

While Kiefer Sutherland is widely recognized for his prolific acting career, particularly as Jack Bauer in the television series 24, he has also carved out a significant presence in the music world as a singer-songwriter. His foray into music is characterized by heartfelt storytelling, a gritty vocal style, and a genuine passion for the craft.

Kiefer Sutherland's music is deeply rooted in the Americana, country, and folk-rock genres. His style is characterized by a raw, honest approach, often reflecting personal experiences and emotions. He started focusing seriously on his music career in the mid-2010s, following years of playing guitar and writing songs as a hobby.

Cosy, Intimate Set With a Long Build-Up

Kiefer Sutherland and his band of five fellow musicians (including a well-hidden woman on keys), played on the small stage of Liseberg.

With names as recognisable as Kiefer Sutherland's, it would be easy assume they would to be playing on the large stage, but at the same time, a smaller, more intimate stage fits his music so lot better. And at the end of the day, it was a wise decision to let the audience experience Sutherland's cosy stage design, decorated like a warm living room, complete with one of those bedside lamps your grandma used to have, in a more natural, modest scale. Having said that, the place was pretty packed with people.

Have you noticed, asked Sutherland, that almost all love songs are either about the beginning or end of a relationship? It's probably an accurate observation. Business as usual is rarely an exciting lyric, I suppose. Although, he doesn't tend to write relationship songs, he added, as he's more interested in other things.

In any regard, the show itself started quite mellow and gradually built up throughout its duration, just shy of an hour and a half. As soon as the lap steel guy switched to an electric guitar, the band turned into a three-guitar band, fit for Sutherland's rockier tunes, and towards the end, it started feeling like a proper rock show. The lead player, sporting a black Gibson Les Paul, also spoiled the audience with plenty of juicy solos, sprinkled in throughout the whole concert.

Photographing the Event

I shot from the pit (kudos to Liseberg for giving me access) and with my usual indoor settings of 1/200s mechanical shutter, aperture at wide open, and Auto ISO.

The lighting rig gave the set a lot of warm, orange tones to match the inviting, homely stage design – something you'll notice in the pictures. As the lights blended with skin tones, I mixed in some monochrome renders for some additional contrast when it felt warranted. Hope y'all don't mind.
